Prices of diesel fuel in France 2000 to 2017
Diesel and fuel prices in France
The average monthly diesel prices in France increased between 2016 and 2018, although interrupted by slight drops. It also appears that gasoline fuel prices increased by 14.6 percent between October 2017 and October 2018.
Fuel prices and transportation in France
In a survey from early 2018, 57 percent of responding French people declared having a diesel car, while a minority said they owned a hybrid car. Furthermore, over a third of respondents in another survey that same year stated spending between 90 and 199 euros a month on transportation (all kinds of transportation included). Since November 2018, France is experiencing a broad social movement called the Yellow Vests Movement (French: Gilets Jaunes), which was born among others through social media as a protest to the rising fuel prices planned by the government in the winter of 2018-2019. Besides all political discussions caused by this movement, the issue of increasing the fuel prices for environmental reasons does not seem to convince the French: in a survey from November 2018, half of the respondents stated that they did not think the recent increase of the fuel prices was necessary to address global warming.
