In 2018, Canadian life insurers held 264 billion Canadian dollars worth of bonds in general funds and 23 billion Canadian dollars in segregated funds. General fund investments include amounts for other policyholder benefits, other liabilities and required capital, whereas segregated funds support annuity contracts, and the policyholders retain the investment risk.
