A further 3.3 thousand patients had been waiting longer than five years for their kidney transplant. On the other hand, there were 742 patients who had been placed on the transplant before starting dialysis. The majority of those waiting for a kidney transplant in 2023 were aged between 16 and 55 years.
Fatalities on the waiting list
Unfortunately, not every patient on transplant waiting lists have the health to continue waiting for the organs they require. In 2022, there were 563 patients who died on the Eurotransplant waiting list needing a kidney transplant. A further 415 patients died while waiting for a liver transplant.
Rate of kidney transplants in Europe
In 2022, Spain had the highest rate of kidney transplants in Europe at 72.9 procedures per million population. The Netherlands followed with the second-highest rate at 58.6 kidney transplants per million.
