Total number of Jumbo supermarkets in the Netherlands 2011-2017
Jumbo is the second largest supermarket chain in the Netherlands, with a market share of just under 20 percent in 2018. According to the most recent count, there were over 580 Jumbo supermarkets in the country. Only Albert Heijn had more branches, at nearly 850.

Franchisees and subsidiaries

The majority of the Jumbo supermarkets in the Netherlands are franchise supermarkets. Between 2010 and 2018, the number of independent supermarkets belonging to the chain grew rapidly, from just 40 in 2010 to 341 in 2018. By comparison, that year Jumbo had 244 subsidiary supermarkets.

Jumbo’s customer base

Jumbo is especially popular among larger households. In 2017, Jumbo reached a penetration rate of 43.2 percent in the Netherlands. Among the one-person households Jumbo’s penetration rate was under 40 percent, whereas among the four-person households this was over 46 percent. Interestingly enough though, households with five or more people tended to shop less at Jumbo. In this group, Jumbo’s penetration rate dropped to less than 43 percent.
