According to the data, Roma Termini was the train station with the highest annual number of passengers as of 2016, reaching 150 million. Trains in Italy, operated by major companies such as Trenitalia and Italo, are one of the most appreciated mobility solutions for private people and business in Italy, since it connects major Italian cities. Additionally, there are also regional companies such as Trenord offering mobility services within Piedmont and Lombardy.

Reasons to use the train

Train services seem to be appreciated by travelers. According to a recent survey, 34 percent reported that a reason to travel by train was its comfort. Another key factor influencing this choice was the possibility of avoiding traffic. Lastly, two percent of the respondents reported that they choose the train for environmental reasons.

Number of trains

Considering figures regarding the number of trains , it can be observed that the Italian region of Tuscany was the region with the highest number of trains in use (410) followed by Lombardy (385). The regions with the lowest number of trains in use were Molise (23) and the Aosta valley region (27).
