Japan: kimono retail market sales share by channel 2021

In 2021, chain stores were the predominant sales channel of the kimono retail market in Japan, accounting for around 37 percent of the retail sales value in the country. That year, the domestic retail sales value of kimono amounted to about 211 billion Japanese yen.

Survey targets were manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers of kimonos and its peripheral goods.
Figures include pure-silk kimonos, pongee kimonos, obi (a band for kimono), recycled kimonos, accessories to wear with kimonos, yukata, and kimonos made with synthetic fiber fabrics. No rental kimonos are included.

The category "others" include the sales of kimonos at kimono-dressing schools, mass merchandisers, total clothing retailers, and direct sales at the wholesalers and manufacturers.
