Share of holiday abroad by accommodation Italy 2020

In 2020, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic disrupted travel and tourism, as countries worldwide put in place emergency measures and lockdowns to limit the spread of the virus. That year, roughly 40 percent of all outbound holiday trips taken by Italians included stays at homes of friends and relatives, while they represented approximately 31 percent of vacations abroad in 2019. Meanwhile, the share of outbound holidays with hotel stays declined from over 41 percent in 2019 to around 30 percent in 2020.
