This statistic presents the distribution of drug overdose deaths in the U.S. in 2010, 2014 and 2015, by drug type. In 2015, natural and semisynthetic opioids accounted for 24.3 percent of all drug overdose deaths, while heroin accounted for 24.8 percent of such deaths. Opioids, primarily prescription pain relievers and heroin, are the main driver of overdose deaths.
