The mean cost per hospital stay at non safety-net hospitals for mental health services was 8,820 U.S. dollars whereas at safety-net hospitals it was 7,736 U.S. dollars. As defined by the Institute of Medicine, the health care safety net comprises hospitals and other providers that organize and deliver a significant level of health care and other health-related services to patients with no insurance or with Medicaid.
