With a market capitalization of over 38 billion euros, Intesa Sanpaolo was the leading bank in Italy listed on the Milan Stock Exchange as of September 2019. Intesa Sanpaolo, together with its fierce competitor UniCredit, dominates the banking sector in the country. The two banking groups are not only the leaders in the domestic market, but also ranked among the 20 leading banks in Europe in terms of market capitalization in 2019.

Intesa Sanpaolo goes global

Established in 2007 through a merger between Banca Intesa and Gruppo Sanpaolo IMI, the newly formed bank Intesa Sanpaolo has become the leader in the banking sector in Italy. Over the years, the banking group has also developed a strategic presence abroad. The outcome of this international strategy? Intesa Sanpaolo counted almost six thousand bank branches and 97 thousand employees worldwide as of 2017.
