This statistic presents the mean share of nonmaternal and nonneonatal inpatient stays with emergency department (ED) services by safety net status and expected payer in the U.S. in 2014. The mean percentage of such inpatient stays at non safety-net hospitals under Medicare as expected payer was 45.6 percent whereas the rest was at safety-net hospitals. As defined by the Institute of Medicine, the health care safety net comprises hospitals and other providers that organize and deliver a significant level of health care and other health-related services to patients with no insurance or with Medicaid.
