This statistic depicts the share of elderly population aged 65 and over suffering from liver cirrhosis or hepatic insufficiency in Spain in 2017, by age group. That year, approximately 1.6 percent of the elderly population aged between 75 and 84 years in Spain suffered from cirrhosis or liver failure.
Hepatic insufficiency is the inability of the liver to perform its normal synthetic and metabolic function usually due to long-term damage. Risk factors include high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, high blood cholesterol, and alcohol abuse as well as having suffered from certain conditions such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
