Every year since the shipping of Tesla cars to the Netherlands started, the sales volume has risen. Due to the favorable taxes on electric vehicles, the American automobile manufacturer sold approximately 8,600 Tesla cars in the Netherlands in 2018, and in the first six months of 2019 close to 6,300 Tesla cars were sold. This marks a significant increase compared to the previous years and more than the 2016 and 2017 sales volumes combined. This result can be seen in the market share of Tesla in the Netherlands as well. In 2012, Tesla’s market share amounted to 0.01 percent, but increased year-by-year and as of 2018, the market share of Tesla had risen to 1.92 percent. Furthermore, their share continued to grow and increased to 3.35 percent in July 2019.
Tesla X heads the list
Looking at the ranking of fully registered electric cars by model in 2019, Tesla’s Model S was with 12,773 registrations a clear leader of the list. Comparing it to the Nissan Leaf (second on the list), their registrations amounted to approximately 6,100, which is twice as less as the S Model. Furthermore, Tesla Model X had roughly 4,600 registrations and closed the top three list of registered electric vehicles.
Tax increase has major impact for Tesla
As well as Tesla performed in 2018, their situation is different in 2019. The Dutch government introduced new tax rules on leased electric cars with a value of more than 50,000 euros. This has a major effect on sales of Tesla and other luxurious electric vehicles. From 2018, the tax for a fully electric car was down at four percent, and as of 2019, cars over 50,000 euros will rise to a 22 percent tax value. This resulted in the decrease of sales volume of Tesla Model X and Model S.
