New diesel cars have a consistently lower fuel consumption level than new petrol cars. In 2020, the average new diesel car in Great Britain used five liters of fuel per 100 kilometers traveled compared with 5.4 liters of fuel consumed by new petrol cars. Both engine types have become more fuel efficient in the period of consideration.
