As of 2019, residents from no other country in Europe spends more amount of daily time on social media than those of Russia: In that year, an average internet user in the Eastern European nation spends 136 minutes everyday surfing social media sites. The most popular social media platform in Russia is YouTube, followed by VKontakte which is also known as Facebook of Russia.

From 2009 to 2018, the internet penetration rate has gone up by a considerable margin in Russia. Back in 2009, just 29 percent of the Russian population had access to internet. Fast forward 9 years and this figure has gone up to 81 percent of the total population. The Russian internet, also known as RuNet, is used by consumers from all age groups, and as of 2019, Russia had the eighth biggest internet population in the world .
