Austria: top 10 online stores

According to the study e-commerce Market Austria 2019, amazon.de, zalando.at and universal.at are among the leading online shops in Austria. In 2018, amazon.de generated e-commerce sales of around US$853.7 million, leading the ranking of the 100 largest online shops in Austria. Zalando.at and universal.at followed by a wide margin: the two online stores generated sales of around US$405.4 million and US$148.3 million, respectively.

Zalando ranks second in Austria

Back in 2008/09, Zalando was only focused on selling shoes online in two different countries: Germany and Austria. Shortly after, clothes and bags were added to the product range and so were other regions in Europe. Zalando is now an online platform for clothing, shoes and accessories and is one of the top-selling online shops in Germany. In 2018, Zalando's turnover amounted to around EUR5.4 billion. In the same year, the company reported a profit of EUR51.2 million. The number of active Zalando customers was around 26.4 million. A total of 116 million orders were placed in 2018, with an average shopping basket value of 61 euros.

Universal, a subsidiary of the German Otto Group

The Otto Group, headquartered in Hamburg, is an internationally operating trading and services group with 30 major corporate groups in more than 30 countries. In the 2018/19 financial year, the group's total turnover was around EUR13.5 billion. The Otto Group's activities are bundled in the company segments Multichannel Retail, Service and Financial Services. The company's core business is multichannel retailing, which comprises the e-commerce, catalogue and stationary distribution channels. The best-known subsidiaries include the fashion retailer Bonprix, the online shop for toys myToys and the sports retailer SportScheck.
