Expenditure on rural employment in India FY 2014-2022
The total national-level expenditure by the Indian government on the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) was the highest in financial year 2022 with over one trillion Indian rupees, up from about 696 billion rupees in fiscal year 2019. MGNREGA is an Indian labor law and social security measure that aims to guarantee the 'right to work' in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to every household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.
