India: donations to electoral trusts by company 2020

In financial year 2020, was the biggest donator to electoral trusts in India with contributions worth over 390 million Indian rupees. Another 150 million rupees came from JSW Energy. Real estate conglomerate DLF contributed a total of 310 million rupees through two of its subsidiaries.

In line with regulations of the Election Commission of India from 2013, Indian companies are allowed to donate to electoral trusts. The trusts then transfer these donations to political parties. Thereby, they are not required to publish the origin of donations to certain political parties. In financial year 2020, over 3.6 billion rupees were disbursed - the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) received the lion's share of over two billion rupees.

It is legal for companies to give donations via electoral trusts. The trusts work as a blind pool. Companies disclose how much funding they have provided, but the trusts are not required to specify which company has funded what party.
