Sales of sun care products in Italy amounted to about 145 million euros in 2022, an increase compared to the previous year. Tanning milk was the most popular product type in that year, accounting for a sales value of nearly 80 million euros, followed by after-sun care products. A large share of sun care product sales was generated through the drugstore channel, while hypermarkets and supermarkets were the second and third most popular distribution channels in 2022. In the same year, roughly 34 percent of Italian consumers taking part in a survey stated that they used face sunscreen all year round, while only 18 percent said the same about body sunscreen.Consumer behavior in Europe
Overall, face sunscreen is more popular than body sunscreen among Europeans, including French and Spanish consumers. The product’s effectiveness and the brand are some of the main factors consumers in Europe take into consideration when purchasing sunscreen. Self-tanning products are also well-appreciated and are mostly used because they allow users to prepare the skin for sun exposure or achieve a tan that would not be possible with sun exposure only.Nivea is one of the leading brands on the continent, especially in France and the United Kingdom. Other popular brands in the region were L’Oréal and its own Garnier, as well as Hawaiian Tropic and Avène.
