Motorcycle industry in Turkey- statistics & facts

The emergence of the motorcycle industry in Turkey commenced at a late stage, as motorcycle manufacturing gained momentum in the 1980s. Since then, numerous Turkish enterprises have started fabricating motorcycles, in response to the escalating demand for two-wheeled transportation due to the increasing population in Turkish big cities. Particularly, Istanbul, the city with the highest population, had a fleet of 567,984 motorcycles on its roads, which constituted the largest proportion of the Turkish motorcycle fleet in 2023.

The two-wheeled transportation sector is currently impacted by the cost of living crisis and accelerated price inflation observed in the country in recent years. As of April 2023, the consumer price index for all items in the basket amounted to 498.61 points, a significant increase compared to the previous five years. This directly affects the average unit prices of motorcycles in the country. Moreover, the prevailing price hikes had a significant impact on the average motorcycle costs in the country. As an example, the average retail price for an on-road motorcycle was 5,460 dollars in 2022, and it's expected to rise in the coming years.

The Rise of the Electric Motorcycles

The recent rise in global gas prices has also impacted the Turkish motorcycle industry. Consequently, the already existing dynamic market in the country has increased interest towards electric motorcycles. From the year 2019, the sales of electric motorcycles have steadily increased in the country, ranging from 42,349 units in 2019 to 136,405 units in 2022. This growth is significantly higher than the sales figures recorded in the major European markets. Furthermore, the market for electric motorcycles and scooters in Turkey was worth 30 billion dollars in 2022 and was expected to reach 55 billion dollars by the year 2032.

Turkish motorcycle production and trade

Turkey is an important motorcycle manufacturer. Many Turkish enterprises are involved in the assembly and production of motorcycles, and have emerged as a significant player in the industry owing to its cost-competitiveness nature due to its low labor and production costs. Consequently, Turkish motorcycles are attractive in the global market. In 2022, the motorcycle production volume reached last decade’s peak of approximately 400,000 units. Consequently, the export of motorcycles in the country has exhibited a comparable trend over the past few years. In 2022, Turkey exported 4,336 metric tons of motorcycles to numerous countries, but the Netherlands was the primary destination. In that year, the Netherlands brought 939 tons of motorcycles from Turkey. Besides being an exporter, Turkey is also a notable importer to supply enough motorcycles to meet the demand of its domestic market. In 2022, the country bought 16,266 tons of two-wheeled vehicles, which was the largest volume in the last five years. That year, China was the leading motorcycle exporter in the Turkish market. The demand for Chinese motorcycles amounted to 5,522 metric tons in 2022.
