Bell Canada (BCE) is the leading broadcaster on the Canadian radio market. Based on commercial revenues the company held 25 percent share of that market in 2017. Rogers Communications accounted for a further 14 percent of the industries revenues. In fact, according to CRTC’s estimations, the major five commercial broadcasters - i.e. BCE, Rogers, Corus, Newcap and Cogeco - had a combined 65-percent share in the Canadian radio market that year. Out of the five measured central markets, the Toronto area claims the highest average radio audience, with more than 5.64 million people listening on a daily basis as of winter 2018/2019. Vancouver radio stations have the second highest audience, with 2.35 million listeners. The most played radio song in Canada was Without Me by American singer-songwriter Halsey. As internet radio has grown in scope and popularity, an increasing share of the Canadian population is accessing AM and FM radio through internet streaming, rather than traditional methods.
Likely due to this movement towards internet based radio and music consumption, the Canadian radio industry has consistently decreased in terms of employment. Advertising figures have also began to stagnate as companies pursuer newer forms of marketing in the hopes of capturing a younger generation of consumers that is less inclined to radio use. In order to adapt to the new digital era, the Canadian radio industry will need to expand further into internet based radio offerings in order to offer its consumers the convenience that they have come to expect with streaming services like Apple Music and Spotify.
