Despite the general decline in commercial vehicle numbers, figures for licensed heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) continued to rise and reached over 500 thousand in 2018. This growth was most strongly felt in the South East region.
In terms of registrations by model, the Fiat Ducato was the most popular HGV as of the fourth quarter of 2018, with 12,358 registered units. When ranking the leading large HGV brands in 2018, DAF trucks clearly dominated the large HGV market with close to 12 thousand vehicles registered.
That same year, box vans were clearly the most common type of commercial vehicle, with 64.6 thousand licensed units, followed by tippers with 40.7 thousand. From 2010 to 2017, the number of licensed dropside vehicles remained more or less steady and accumulated to 21.6 thousand in 2018. Skeletal style commercial vehicles on the other hand were noticeably fewer in number, at 1.7 thousand licensed units as of that same year.
