VoD in the Netherlands - Statistics & Facts

Dutch audiences have a lot of options for watching films, television or video content at home. In 2018, there were around 160 SVOD, TVOD or other catch-up platforms available in the Netherlands. Most of the video on demand services in the country were geared towards "film and TV fiction" in 2018. Not only were there a lot of VoD services, they also took up the most time spent on digitial devices. According to a 2019 survey, people in the Netherlands spend roughly six billion minutes a day using digital media. More than one quarter of this time is devoted to watching video on demand, which is more than, for example, time spent on watching linear television, playing video games or keeping up with social media.

A potential reason why VoD could become popular in the Netherlands is the relatively fast digital infrastructure in the country. More than 40 percent of broadband connections at the end of 2018 had an average internet speed of 100 Mbps or more. This makes it easier to stream video on the consumers' preferred device. Roughly 45 percent of Dutch households had a smart TV in 2017, for example, with over three quarters of Smart TV owners saying they used an app on it at least once a month. Smartphones also became increasingly popular for watching television, video or movies online: 58 percent of all millennials (ages 23 to 37) indicated they watched online videos on their smartphone in 2019. The use of OTT hardware like an Apple TV or Google Chromecast was less common in the Netherlands, with roughly 17 percent of households using these.

Netflix is by far the biggest video streaming service in the Netherlands, surpassing physical DVD and/or Blue-ray sales, Transactional Video On Demand and the market size of its direct competitors Videoland and KPN/Ziggo in 2018. Netflix reached a revenue of over 200 million euros that year, an increase of roughly ten percent compared to 2017. The SVOD service had over three million Dutch users in 2019, making it one of the country's highest ranked online video platforms. This situation could change at the end of 2019, however, as the Netherlands will be among the first three countries in the world to get the new streaming service Disney+.
