After the economic crisis, the mine production of gold has been increasing steadily all over the world. In 2008, global gold production from mines accounted for 2.28 thousand metric tons and rose over three thousand metric tons from 2015 onwards. In 2018, China was the largest manufacturer of gold in the world, with production reaching 400 metric tons. In comparison, the world production of silver from mines has seen a few fluctuations, but increased overall during the past decade totaling 27 thousand metric tons in 2018. Of these, 6.1 thousand metric tons were attributable to Mexico's silver mines.

Import values of various precious metals to the United Kingdom (UK) increased. For instance, with semi-manufactured gold figures reached 26.65 billion British pounds in 2017. Additionally, the value of silver waste and scrap imports increased more than two-fold from 2009 to 2017, totaling 691.25 million British pounds in 2017. That same year, nearly 1.39 million British pounds worth of unwrought or partly worked platinum were shipped to the United Kingdom.

When it comes to the United Kingdom's export of precious metals, a different tendency was showing. Regarding the sales of mercury, the United Kingdom exported 13 thousand British pounds in 2017, which was the lowest figure recorded since 2009. The export of bismuth also experienced a noticeable decrease, with values amounting to 3.87 million British pounds in 2017. In contrast, the overseas sale of basic precious non-ferrous metals saw a substantial increase between 2000 and 2018, with figures spiking at 11.82 billion British pounds in the latter year.
