One of the most popular destinations in Europe and worldwide, Paris succeeds in attracting millions of visitors every year thanks to a particularly varied tourism offer. From iconic monuments, museums, and tourist attractions to its renowned gardens, cafés, and markets, the city plays a fundamental role in supporting travel and tourism in France. In 2022, the total number of tourist arrivals to Paris and Île-de-France, the region surrounding the French capital, exceeded 40 million. While this figure roughly doubled compared to the previous year, it remained below the volume of inbound and domestic travelers reported in 2019, before the onset of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Overall, as forecast, the direct contribution of travel and tourism to Paris’ gross domestic product was expected to reach an estimated 30 billion euros in 2022, showing strong signs of recovery after the impact of the health crisis.

Aside from the pivotal role played by the city for the inbound tourism market in France, figures on the domestic tourism expenditure in Paris show that French travelers contributed significantly to the tourism economy in the country’s capital. In 2022, domestic travel spending also surpassed pre-pandemic levels, amounting to around four billion euros. When breaking down the share of domestic tourist arrivals in Paris and Île-de-France by region, travelers from Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes accounted for most arrivals that year, followed by visitors from Hauts-de-France.

In 2022, attendance at Disneyland Paris theme park reached nearly 10 million, recovering from the impact of the health crisis and surpassing the number of visitors from 2019.
