Child mortality in Albania 1895-2020
In 1895, the child mortality rate in Albania was 375 deaths per thousand children (under five years old). This means that 37.5 percent of all children did not make it to their fifth birthday. There is a slight decrease in child mortality until the end of the Second World War, when the it was just under 290 deaths per thousand births. At the end of the war, the communist party took control of the state and made powerful reforms, which saw a great increase in industrialization and urbanization, leading to a higher standard of living. This is evident in the steep reduction in child mortality between 1950 and 1955, where it fell by almost one hundred deaths per birth in this five year period. From here until 1980 the decline in Albania's child mortality rate remained quite high, and it continues to decrease today. In 2020, Albania's child mortality rate is just eleven deaths per thousand births. When compared with infant mortality we can see that eight of these eleven deaths are of children younger than one year old.
