In 2020, the number of wholesale fishery markets in landing areas in Japan amounted to 299. The number of wholesale fishery markets in consuming areas declined steadily within the last decade, reaching a low of 201. Wholesale markets play a major role in the distribution of fishery products in Japan, with the largest central market being the Tsukiji fish market prior to its relocation to the Toyosu Market.
