Europe: retail investment demand for gold 2022

Demand for physical gold investment among retail investors in Europe varied year on year. Investment demand then experienced three peaks above 70 tons from 2020 to 2022. Nonetheless, the demand has decreased to its lowest values for the last two quarters of 2023 recording 29.7 tons in the fourth quarter. The demand for physical gold investment is partly influenced by the level of uncertainty in the market. During times of higher inflation, for example, investors opt to hold their cash in a more stable commodity.
