Projected coal capacity change in the U.S. 2022-2029, by state
Several U.S. states are planning to significantly increase wind and solar capacity in coming years, which will help replace existing coal capacity. Delaware and New Jersey are projected to reduce their coal capacity by 100 percent by 2029, relative to November 2022. Meanwhile Wyoming, which has one of the highest shares of coal in the power mix, should see its capacity reduced by roughly 20 percent in the period.
