Retailers planning to reduce Scope 3 emissions 2021
Most carbon emissions of retail companies are classified under Scope 3 emissions, which include most operations and distribution of goods and services. Several retailers took action to align with science-based climate targets by 2030, reducing their Scope 3 emissions. As of July 2021, the percentage of target completion differed greatly among retailers, indicating that some companies are more advanced than others, also due to different start date of target submission.
Of all listed companies, online marketplace Etsy was the one very much behind, with a negative value 1,180 percent. The figure is due to the boosting revenue and therefore increased business activity of the company; higher volumes of traded merchandise produces higher emissions.
