Total financial assets in Europe 2022, by management type
As of 2022, the total level of financial assets in Europe rested at approximately 89 trillion euros. Internally managed institutional assets accounted for the largest share of the total asset amount. These assets typically refer to institutions such as banks, hedge funds, insurance companies, and mutual funds that manage their portfolios in-house. Unmanaged retail assets or assets of High Net Worth (HNW) individuals accounted for 15 trillion euros. These are assets or portfolios that an advisor does not manage. When an asset is not included in a managed system, it is considered to be an unmanaged asset. The portion of assets managed by asset managers in Europe for retail clients came to a total of nine trillion euros.
