As of 2019, there was a significant shortfall between total ratios and recommended target ratios of medical specialties per 100,000 population in South Africa. Anesthesiology had the largest shortage compared to the recommended target ratio of five, with an actual ratio of 2.03. Pediatrics followed with a deficiency of 2.58, and surgery placed third with a ratio of 1.14. The public sector accounts for the vast majority of shortages among medical specialties.
