Main causes of mortality in U.S. patients with end-stage kidney disease in 1999-2020

A study of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD)-associated deaths in the United States revealed that, in 1999, cardiovascular (CV) diseases were the most common underlying causes of mortality among patients with ESKD, accounting for 33 percent of such deaths. However, in 2020, genitourinary mortality was the most common cause of death among ESKD patients, with 45 percent of deaths, followed by CV causes, with a share of 18 percent. End-stage kidney disease (ESKD)

The study included all decedents with CKD (N18) as a contributing cause of mortality. The main cause of mortality in decedents with any CKD and ESKD was categorized into CV (I*), genitourinary (N*), endocrine (E*), malignancy (C*, D00-D49), infections (A*-B*), and gastrointestinal (K*).

The Multiple Cause of Death database accessed through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-Ranging, Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (CDC WONDER) was used by the study.

Database comprises mortality for US residents and population count from all US counties between 1999 and 2020.
