Weekend box office revenue - November 2019

Weekend box office revenue of the top 10 movies in the United States and Canada as of November 22, 2019 (in million U.S. dollars)

by Amy Watson, last edited Nov 25, 2019
Weekend box office revenue - November 2019 The movie with the most revenue at the North American box office was ‘Frozen 2’ as of November 22, 2019, generating 127 million U.S. dollars. Second was ‘Ford v. Ferrari' with 16 million dollars in box office revenue. This ranking showing the revenue made by the latest films at the box office in the United States and Canada changes as recent releases are shown at cinemas and make their way into the top ten.
The North American box office

In 2018, box office revenue in North America amounted to 11.89 billion U.S. dollars, more than four times the figure recorded for 1980. This is just one of the many ways in which the movie industry has changed over the last few decades. For example, back in 2010, action movies accounted for 16.9 percent of the North American box office, but by 2018 movies in this genre had the highest box office market share. Meanwhile, romantic comedies dropped in popularity at the box office.

Romantic comedies: where is the love?

The rom-com genre has been in a state of flux since the mid-1990s. The number of tickets sold for romantic comedies peaked in 1999 with 142.24 million sales, the year that gave us beloved classics such as ‘Notting Hill’, ‘She’s All That’ and ’10 Things I Hate About You’.

However, ticket sales for this genre have fluctuated enormously ever since. The sales figure for 2000 was almost half that of the previous year. Then, in 2004, the number of tickets sold made its way back up over 100 million thanks to the release of the sequels to ‘The Princess Diaries’ and ‘Bridget Jones’ as well as new movies ’50 First Dates’, ‘Along Came Polly’ and ‘Something’s Gotta Give’. In 2005, ticket sales dropped again, and a similar pattern can be seen between 2007 and 2008.

Ticket sales have failed to surpass 40 million since 2012, and in 2017 just 9.59 million sold for rom-coms in the U.S. and Canada. Whilst 26.87 million tickets were sold in 2018, this was largely thanks to the success of ‘Crazy Rich Asians’, which far outperformed all other rom-coms released that year.
