Smartphone market in China – additional information

Samsung and Apple smartphones had been projected to be the highest sold smartphone brands in China, totaling 65 million units and 36 million units, respectively, in 2015. Likewise, Samsung phones had contributed to 24.5 percent of the global smartphone market share as of 2014. Apple phones are beginning to overtake Samsung in the higher-end market, while local vendors and brands are dominating the low-end market. However, about 72.8 percent of the market is held by Android operating systems while Apple’s iOS currently holds about 25.4 percent of the smartphone operating system market in China.

Smartphones in China made up about 85.7 percent of total cell phone sales in 2013. Chinese smartphone users tend to gravitate towards phones with larger screens but lower cost cell phones are also highly important to consumers, which may alter Apple’s profits in the near future. The share of smartphone users in China had also been increasing from 26.3 percent of the population in 2012 to a projected 51.6 percent by 2018. However, as smartphone ownership becomes more commonplace, China’s previously massive smartphone market growth will start to slow. The market in India is projected to be the world’s next fastest growing market and is expected to exceed that of the United States in within a few years. The number of smartphone users in India is projected to increase from 470 million users in 2012 to a 730.7 million users by 2017.
