Cosmetic make-up – additional information

The term make-up refers to cosmetic preparations, such as powder or creams, which are designed to enhance the appearance of the body, especially the face, by application. Make-up comes in a broad variety of products. Lipsticks, concealers, foundations, bronzers, mascaras and eyeliners are decorative products that are commonly used by women to boost or cover their facial features.

Concealers and foundations are typically used to cover spots and imperfections of the skin or uneven skin coloration. Recent surveys show that more than 30 percent of the American adults use foundations and concealer make-up.

The cosmetic market is a growing industry in the United States. According to calculations, the U.S. cosmetic industry is projected to generate revenues of more than 60 billion U.S. dollars and employ about 63,816 people by 2016. One of the biggest make-up manufacturers in the U.S. is the French-based company L’Oréal, followed by its closest competitor Estée Lauder. L’Oréal is primarily specialized in skin care, hair care, hair colorants, perfumes and make-up.

Several channels can be used to sell cosmetic products, such as drug stores, supermarkets and discount stores. However, the growing use of computers and internet enhances the online retail market. Online sales of beauty products have increased steadily since 2004, generating approximately 21.47 billion U.S. dollars in sales in the U.S. by 2015. On the global market, make-up products accounted for approximately 18.2 percent of the total cosmetic market value.
