As demand for air travel continues to grow, Canadian passenger traffic reached its highest peak in 2017, with just over 84 million passengers boarded by the major Canadian air carriers. Canadian airports reported over 4.4 million aircraft movements and 1.3 million tonnes of air freight were loaded and unloaded in 2017.

With 49.5 million passengers handled in 2018, Toronto Pearson International Airport was the largest and busiest Canadian airport. In 2018, the airport reported operating revenue of 1.47 billion Canadian dollars. The airport was at the top of the list in terms of cargo traffic, with more than 356,000 metric tons of loaded and unloaded cargo in 2014.

Vancouver International Airport ranked second, handling just under 26 million passengers in 2018 and generating operating revenue of over 565 million Canadian dollars. The airport was the largest domestic airport in terms of cargo traffic in 2014, handling more than 83,000 metric tons compared to Toronto Pearson, with 72,680 metric tons.

With over 19.4 million passengers, Montréal’s combined airports (Pierre-Elliot Trudeau International Airport and Mirabel International Airport) ranked third, followed closely by Calgary International Airport, with 17.3 million passengers. In 2018, Calgary International Airport reported operating expenses to the value of more than 562 million Canadian dollars and handled just a little under 85,000 metric tons of cargo in 2014.
