(in billion euros)
Quarterly e-commerce spendings in the Netherlands 2014-2019
Online shopping expenses in the Netherlands nearly reached six billion euros during the second quarter of 2019, an eight percent increase when compared to Q2 2018. The total market size of e-commerce in the Netherlands was roughly 23.7 billion euros in the Netherlands.

The fourth quarter in particular sees an increase of e-commerce spending due to the holiday season. The Netherlands celebrates Saint Nicholas (or "Sinterklaas") on December 5, by way of giving presents to (especially) children. As of 2018, the revenue of online retail during the Sinterklaas period in the Netherlands, amounted to roughly 311 million euros, which is higher than the average online shopping weekly revenue outside of the 'Sint' season. Consumers saw access to other consumers reviews and home delivery as reasons to use online purchase channels for their Saint Nicholas or Christmas gifts.
