UK coffeehouse chains
Over the past decade high streets in the United Kingdom witnessed a continuously increasing number of stores of coffee shop chains. Costa is the most prominent one, with its stores more than doubling in number over the past eight years. As of 2018, there were approximately eight thousand branded coffee chains and seven thousand were run by independent operators. However, the market has displayed signs of reaching its saturation point.
Coffee consumption
Despite the growing number of coffee shops, the average consumption of coffee outside the home decreased from 84 milliliters in 2004, to 78 milliliters per person per week as of 2017. In contrast, between 2006 and 2017 the average weekly purchase of coffee beans, instant coffee, and coffee beans increased from 17 grams to 23 grams per person.
