Average daily internet & social media use in Russia 2017-2023
The mean time spent every day using the internet has been growing year-on-year in Russia. From 2017 to 2023, internet usage time across the country increased by 90 minutes per day on average. At the same time, the mean time spent on social media measuring at two hours and 21 minutes in 2023.
Internet usage in Russia
Following continuous growth since 2000, over 90 percent of the Russian population had access to the internet in 2022. In terms of usage location, the penetration rate in urban areas was somewhat higher when compared to rural locations. The number of internet users in the country was forecast to continously increase, exceeding 139 million by 2029.
Social media usage in Russia
Vkontakte, Facebook's Russian version for some, has been maintaining the leading position as the most popular social media platform across the country throughout the last years and accounted for most publications in October 2023. Instagram, which was blocked in Russia effective from March 14, 2022, listed as the most popular foreign social media platform by number of Russian-language posts. Female users prevailed across all major social networks, except for Twitter and YouTube, where male share constituted approximately 61 percent of all users.
