CO2 emissions of largest banks worldwide 2022

According to environmental reporting on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the largest banks worldwide, based on total assets, four Chinese banks reported the highest emissions in 2022. Agricultural Bank of China reported total GHG emissions of more than two million tonnes of CO2 equivalent. It was followed by the Industrial & Commercial Bank of China. JPMorgan Chase reported the highest GHG emissions among the non-Chinese banks, with 961,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.

Crédit Agricole (France) was among the top 15 largest bank in the world by total assets, but has due to lack of data availability been excluded from this statistic.

Figures refer to Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, except for BNP Paribas (France) and HSBC Holdings (UK), where Scope 3 is also included.

*Emissions data of Bank of Communications Co. Ltd. (China) refers the Head Office and the institutions based in Beijing.
