Artificial Intelligence in Germany - statistics & facts

Artificial intelligence is a term for a type of computer intelligence that is in some way similar to human intelligence. Essentially this means that the computer can solve problems like humans can. To simulate this kind of intelligence, machine learning is used. This is where computers are taught to learn patterns from data in such a way that the computer can then apply what it has learned to unknown examples. Fraud detection, online customer support, and online recommendations are just a few ways in which AI is currently used. In the future, AI could be used for automated cars or even robots to aid with daily tasks. Though Germany may have a reputation for often choosing more traditional analog methods over technological advances in many aspects of life, forecasts suggest that AI will make an impact on the market and see revenues of over 20 billion euros by 2028.

How do Germans feel about AI?

In terms of worldwide acceptance and trust of artificial intelligence, Germans rank seventh, with 35 percent of people willing to either accept or trust AI. There may be several reasons that people are not ready to accept AI, including the fact that it is so new and much of how it will impact society is still unknown. Among the main disadvantages of artificial intelligence were several: that machines would be favored over people, and people would face discrimination, manipulation, as well as that there will be a lack of transparency when AI becomes a replacement for certain tasks. Although this highlights a few of the reasons for the reluctance some Germans feel towards accepting AI, many also recognize the advantages of integrating it into daily life. These advantages include saving time, energy, and providing relief from routine work. Furthermore, the data shows that compared to 2021, there has been an increase in the share of people who see these advantages, which could mean that in the future acceptance of AI will only grow.

AI in business

Around 34 percent of businesses in Germany had reportedly deployed the use of artificial intelligence in 2022. This figure matched the global average, however, it was lower than countries such as China, Singapore, and India. Investment in AI does not appear to be a priority for companies in Germany, with 64 percent of companies stating that they have not invested in AI and do not intend to. This is likely due to the variety of obstacles that companies face when it comes to implementing AI, such as not enough personnel, missing data, and a lack of financial resources. Since AI is rapidly changing the business landscape, it seems unlikely that companies will be able to avoid investing in AI for much longer, and will have to find solutions for the problems they face.
