Rio de Janeiro: cellphone thefts 2023

In 2022, almost 47,000 mobile phones were stolen in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. The number of mobile phones that were robbed by use of force was slightly higher than the previous year. However the number of petty thefts, which are defined by the lack of use of force, increased drastically in this time, more than doubling from around 14,000 to 30,000 incidents, likely due to the end of the Covid-19 pandemic.
