It was estimated that social media advertising spending worldwide amounted to nearly 27 billion U.S. dollars in 2018, and according to forecasted figures global expenditures on this channel will further grow to more than 37 billion by the end of 2020. By 2019 social network ad spending will already have doubled compared to 2016, showing impressive growth in a short time span.

Influence of social media ads

Numerous surveys examine the attitude of consumers to advertisements on social media and the potential influence those ads have on purchasing decisions. In early 2019 it was found that internet users in certain countries were more prone to buy products or services advertised on social media than respondents form other countries. Only four percent of survey participants from Turkey said they had never made a purchase influenced by a social media ad, whereas the same was true for over 42 percent of people in the UK. The same study looked at these responses and analyzed differences between age groups. In this case, not surprisingly, the majority of consumers older than 65 years said they never bought anything they saw advertised on social media, whereas Millennials were more likely to have done so.
