Most viewed movie trailers in their first 24 hours as of March 2019
Whilst ‘Avengers: Endgame’ tops the list for most watched movie trailers within 24 hours of release with 289 million views in that time, the movie is just one of the several trailers in the top ten list that are part of the Marvel franchise. The trailer for ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ had 136 million views within 24 hours of its online debut, and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ also featured prominently in the ranking. ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ also holds the title for the biggest opening weekend at the North American box office in terms of revenue.

Why do so many people watch movie trailers?

Not only do trailers appeal to avid fans awaiting the next instalment of their favorite franchise, they captivate filmgoers and movie buffs by showcasing the most powerful, exciting and awe-inspiring snippets of a movie they didn’t even know they wanted to see. In fact, recent data shows that trailers are among the most popular ways of discovering new movies, TV shows and video content in the United States.

The ease of accessing online videos means that whether movie trailer viewers seek out that content or not, they’re likely to see it at some point. Netflix has introduced auto-playing trailers, a feature which gives subscribers a taste of the content they’re browsing. Teasers for movies even appear in the form of sponsored ads on Facebook or on banners across news websites.

In an age where news of a leaked music video can spread across the internet like wildfire in a matter of minutes, it is unsurprising that trailers for eagerly anticipated blockbuster films like the Avengers attract such large audiences just hours after their release.

Movie trailers are and will continue to be a key part of the movie industry. Film studios spend millions of dollars on promoting their latest movie teasers on TV, which is just one more way trailers can accumulate huge amounts of views in a short period of time, and big movies get people talking.
