This statistic represents Volkswagen AG's worldwide vehicle production from 2006 through 2018. The Volkswagen Group produced around 11 million vehicles in 2018.
Volkswagen's production of motor vehicles worldwide
In 2017, Volkswagen produced around eleven million passenger and commercial vehicles globally. The world’s second largest motor vehicle manufacturer operates 52 locations for components and 68 passenger car production locations. Volkswagen Group sells cars, trucks and motorcycles under 12 different brands, including the Volkswagen namesake brand, Porsche, Audi, Ducati, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, SCANIA and MAN. VW’s platform sharing strategy has been the mainspring of the group’s success: Volkswagen uses the same platform to manufacture different models and brands. Furthermore, the company has shifted part of its production to China, which has emerged as the number one market for passenger vehicles globally. Volkswagen's production numbers amounted to just over four million vehicles in China in 2017.
In September 2015, it was confirmed that around 8.5 million vehicles sold by Volkswagen were fitted with rigged engines. As a result of the Volkswagen diesel scandal, the company has been accused of nefarious and disingenuous behavior. Despite the lack of trustworthiness the carmaker now has, Volkswagen continued to increase its car sales in 2016. That year, VW appointed Matthias Mueller as the new CEO.
